St John’s-on-the-Hill

St Johns School-on-the-Hill, co-educational preparatory school in WalesSt John’s-on-the-Hill is situated in extensive, attractive grounds on the border of Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire, overlooking Chepstow Castle and the beautiful Wye Valley. Served by an excellent motorway system, just three miles from the old Severn Bridge, St John’s provides a consistently high standard of care and education for boys and girls aged from 3 months to 4 years in the Day Nursery, from 4 to 7 years in the Pre-Prep and from 7 to 13 years in Main School.

Discovering and developing individual talent

The family atmosphere ensures that each child is valued and that there is time to cater for the needs of all. A high standard of teaching and small class sizes combined with first-class facilities ensure boys and girls can develop both their academic ability and their character to the full. Emphasis is on mutual respect, integrity, and the need to discover and develop individual talents, whether they are creative, intellectual or athletic.

Celebrating achievement

St John’s values achievement both in and out of the classroom. The aim of the sporting programme is to ensure that all children develop a love of both team and individual sports, and understand the importance of losing gracefully and winning modestly. A varied outdoor education programme enhances each child’s personal and social development. The School also offers a wide range of non-academic activities and after-school clubs. St John’s has a specialist learning support department and welcomes children across the ability range.

Scholarships and awards are made for academic, music, sporting and dramatic ability. HM Forces bursaries are also available.

Boarding at St John’s

Children can board from the age of seven on a full, weekly or ‘flexi’ basis. The boarding house is family-run and has a friendly, homely atmosphere. A varied programme of weekend outings and activities is offered to the many boarders who remain at St John’s throughout the term.

Building on tradition

St John’s holds sound traditional values while embracing the best of modern approaches. The environment at St John’s is stimulating in its breadth of opportunity and yet personal in its size.

Creating the future

On leaving St John’s, children enter a wide range of senior schools of their choice, and, with more than 30 senior school scholarships in the last two years, St John’s is justifiably proud of its scholarship record and senior school links.

The best possible start for the best possible future.
